What is krill?
Probably the largest occurrence of a life form on our planet. Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans that are found in all the world's oceans, but especially in the ice-cold, crystal-clear waters of the polar seas. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is the only type of krill that can be fished. Because it swims in open water, in large swarms of up to six km in length, with a density of one million krill per cubic meter. Krill feeds mainly on algae. It is the main source of food for many marine mammals and fish. The krill grows to six centimeters, weighs around two grams and lives up to six years. Although it is very small, its total “biomass” is estimated at 725 million tons. Almost three times as much as the total weight of all people on earth.

Sustainability through certified krill catch.
Even if krill is abundant on our planet and has an extremely high rate of reproduction, it is an important source of food for the marine fauna and for many bird species. Strict controls ensure that krill catches are limited to sustainable levels. Currently, less than 0.03% of the total krill resources are fished annually. That is well below the permitted annual catch quota for sustainable krill catch of 1%. The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) regulates the fishing limits and, if necessary, adjusts them to requirements. The krill for O-Krill 3 is fished in an ethical way. The independent organization MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certifies the sustainable catch. This is confirmed by the MSC seal on the packaging.

Certified catch
A quality product from organic fishing. The krill that O-Krill 3 is made from comes from Antarctica, the world's cleanest ocean. There are no pollutants there. Krill is rich in astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant that naturally keeps krill oil fresh. This means that only minimal processing is required. Preservatives can be dispensed with. The procedure for catching and processing krill oil has been certified by the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), an independent non-profit organization. A specially developed fishing trawler filters out other, unwanted fish. The krill is taken fresh and alive on board and processed immediately in order to preserve all nutrients and vital substances.

What is special about krill oil?
The unsaturated fatty acids omega-3 in krill oil are bound to phospholipids and can therefore be used very quickly. In contrast, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are in triglyceride form, which means they can be absorbed more slowly. In addition, krill oil contains the naturally occurring antioxidant astaxanthin. Due to the easy digestibility and quick absorption of the omega-3 fatty acids, omega-3 krill oil does not cause belching and does not leave a fishy aftertaste.
It comes from environmentally conscious and sustainable fishing (MSC certified). The krill oil contains significantly more EPA and DHA than the vegetable variants. This is important because fat research has shown that the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA have a particularly positive effect on heart health.

- 10x better source of Omega 3 than fish
- Good digestibility
- No belching with a fishy aftertaste
- Gentle production
- Small capsules (Licaps)

Why Udo's Choice Krill Oil?
The UC krill oil in O-Krill 3 comes from krill, which is sustainably harvested in crystal clear water (pristine water) of the Antarctic Ocean under MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) conditions. Thanks to this ecological harvesting method, the krill remains a valuable and inexhaustible source for future generations.

What is astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin is a natural coloring agent and is related to the well-known beta-carotene. It is responsible for the red coloration of crustaceans and is obtained industrially from the alga Haematococcus pluvialis. Of particular interest in fish nutrition is the fact that astaxanthin has a vitamin-like effect and thus has a positive effect on fertility and the immune defense of fish in breeding facilities. In fish, astaxanthin, which has a ten-fold stronger effect than beta-carotene, not only intensifies the red but also the yellow, green and blue pigments and makes the meat salmon-red. The natural color of the flesh of salmon is due to the astaxanthin content of the small crustaceans consumed. Astaxanthin is approved as a feed additive (E 161) for fish feed in the production of edible fish. It is used to feed the otherwise white-fleshed rainbow trout a salmon-red meat. They are then marketed as salmon trout. Astaxanthin can protect the skin from the stress caused by UV rays and in this function has a much stronger effect than vitamin E. Astaxanthin supplements the protective effect of sunscreens and is not washable. It is already being taken by some Ironman athletes.
